Rear extension in steel and timber frame, Hitchin,

This Victorian mid-terrace has been thoughtfully extended to the rear to create a generous family dining room, while the existing kitchen has been enlarged and reconfigured to include a convenient new WC.

The extension is beautifully bright thanks to a fully glazed rear gable and rooflights that bring daylight deep into the home. By choosing not to build out to the side of the existing outrigger, the clients achieved a space that feels connected to the garden, with views and natural light enhancing the room throughout the day.

Despite the narrow site and tricky access, the project was delivered efficiently. A simple steel frame combined with timber-framed construction allowed the team to streamline the build and maximise the usable footprint of the extension. The result is a modern, welcoming space that perfectly complements the home’s Victorian character.
