The outbuilding is located in the front courtyard area adjacent to a listed building. The outbuilding comprised two covered bays enclosed by an attractive solid brickwall, with a saddleback brick coping. The wall tapers down in height along the south-west flank elevation.
The conversion to a habitable space has been designed to be sympathetic to the adjacent listed buliding in terms of design and materials. The timber structure was rebuilt to replicating the post and beam design along the front, and the enclosing brick wall was retained. Above the tapering flank wall a new feature window provides an attractive contemporary feature and throws daylight into the building. The remaining areas of wall have been finished in horizontal timber boarding, painted black, to match the listed builidng.
The front face of the new room is set back slightly from the timber posts at the front to provide a covered verandah. This elevation is fully glazed, with French doors, and there is a small step out forwards at the end to provide a lobby entrance area.
Low profile flat rooflights have maximised the natural light internally, as the front elevation is north facing.
