The buildings, collectively known as ‘The Old Police Station,’ are situated in the heart of Royston town centre within the Royston Conservation Area. While not listed, they have been recognised for their local and historical significance.
The residential conversion created two flats, one maisonette, and a four-bedroom family home. Of particular interest are the retained cells and courtroom within the family home, where a new mezzanine level was added to maximise the double-height space.
HAL successfully negotiated targeted relaxations to Part L building regulations to preserve the building’s unique character. Strict planning conditions required high standards of acoustic separation between dwellings and mechanical ventilation to minimise disturbance from external noise, ensuring both comfort and compliance.
'Our project was far from straightforward and involved the refurbishment of three old victorian buildings into both detached houses and flats. The service, professionalism and advice we received throughout the project from Hal was first class while at the same time friendly. I would recommend Hal to anyone from small/self builder to large developer.' Mr John Hanson, Royston.
